The Biggest Wedding Trends for 2026: What’s In, What’s Out, and What Couples Love

Curious about what’s latest and greatest this wedding season? We asked the experts, did the research, and compiled the list for you.

When it comes to hosting a wedding, couples today are looking for the “wow” factor that makes their day truly unforgettable. Here at Sun Valley, our outdoor grounds and open-concept venue create the perfect building blocks to match any vision.

But the biggest trend we’re seeing this year?

Intentionality.

The future of weddings is all about creating a celebration that reflects the unique love story of each couple and the journey that brought them together.

So what’s trending now?

Food as Decor

Remember the ice sculptures of the 80s? Those are being replaced with food as décor.

Food is emotional. It’s cultural. It can highlight traditions from each side of the family. Couples are saying goodbye to cookie-cutter centerpieces and embracing textured displays and richly colored signature dishes that double as design elements.

Interesting Tablescapes

Your guests will spend a good chunk of the evening at their tables, so why not make them part of the experience?

Traditional chargers and napkin rings may be fading out, but they’re being replaced with bold and interesting designs. Think layered linens, unique materials, intentional pops of pattern, or subtle metallic shine. And while the “safe charger” may be disappearing, we’re seeing creative alternatives like textured placemats and layered place settings taking their place.

Enhanced Lighting

Not every venue allows open flames indoors—although Sun Valley does!

Lighting plays a huge role in setting the mood. Think about your own home—how often do you rely on bright overhead lights? Probably not often! The same idea applies to your reception.

Couples are moving away from bright overhead lighting and embracing warm, intentional ambiance. While votives and candlesticks will never go out of style, uplighting and dance-floor lighting can add color, energy, and atmosphere that evolves throughout the night.

Drapery Everywhere

It’s no secret that ceiling drapery can transform a space.

If you’re looking to soften a large open room or create a more intimate setting for dinner, ceiling swags and draped backdrops are a beautiful solution. We always recommend talking with your venue coordinator to see what installation options are available.

A soft chiffon ceremony backdrop, ceiling draping in your wedding colors, or velvet behind a lounge area can instantly elevate the space and make it feel uniquely yours.

Retro Customs

We’re always fans of out with the old and in with the new. For example… the garter toss?

That one might finally be on its way out (rightfully so!). But some vintage traditions are making a stunning comeback.

Think champagne towers, cascading bouquets, old-school piping on cakes. The classic details that feel nostalgic while still elegant are making a breathtaking comeback. These moments add a touch of timeless glamour without feeling outdated.

While we’ll always encourage couples to choose what makes them happiest, here are a few trends we predict may be on their way out:

Single-Use Décor

Couples today are leaning toward eco-friendly and sustainable options.

Using the TVs at Sun Valley for welcome signs, engagement photo galleries, or seating charts is a great way to incorporate design elements without creating waste at the end of the night.

Traditional Guest Books

Instead of simply signing their name in a book, couples are creating interactive guest experiences.

Think “Vintage Voicemail” guest books, Polaroid photo albums, or jars where guests leave date-night ideas and advice for the couple.

Flip Flops for the Dance Floor

While the idea is thoughtful, we’re seeing baskets of untouched shoes left behind at the end of the night.

Instead, couples are focusing on experiences that keep guests dancing—without leaving behind extra items that often go unused.
